Specialized Programs

Intensive Setting (ASD / Significant Developmental Delays)

The Intensive Setting is designed for students on the autism spectrum and students with significant developmental delays who require a high level of support across all areas of functioning. This setting typically serves up to 10 students, supported by one certified teacher and one full-time paraprofessional, allowing for close supervision and individualized attention throughout the school day.

Students in this setting benefit from a highly structured learning environment that emphasizes consistency, predictability, and routine. Instruction focuses on the development of academic skills, communication, social interaction, behavior regulation, and independent living skills. Visual supports, hands-on learning, frequent prompting, and repetition are embedded into daily instruction to meet each student’s unique needs.

The program is individualized and may include modified or heavily supported curriculum, differentiated instruction, and data-driven goals aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Collaboration with related service providers ensures that students receive comprehensive support to promote growth, functional communication, and increased independence.

Specialized Setting

The Specialized Setting serves students with a variety of exceptionalities who require additional support but are able to benefit from a less intensive environment than the intensive setting. Class sizes typically range from 18 to 20 students, with one teacher and at least one paraprofessional. Depending on student needs and ratios, an additional paraprofessional may be assigned to ensure appropriate support.

In this setting, students receive targeted instruction to address academic, communication, social, and independent functioning skills. While instruction remains structured, students are encouraged to build greater independence, peer interaction, and self-advocacy skills.

Teachers use differentiated instruction and accommodations to meet diverse learning needs while aligning instruction as closely as possible to grade-level standards. Supports such as small-group instruction, visual aids, and scaffolded tasks help students access the curriculum while continuing to work toward increasing independence and readiness for less restrictive placements when appropriate.

Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Setting

The VPK Setting is a voluntary prekindergarten program designed to prepare young learners for a successful transition into kindergarten. This setting focuses on building foundational skills in a developmentally appropriate and supportive learning environment.

Students are introduced to early academic concepts such as early literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving, while also developing critical social-emotional skills, including following routines, participating in group activities, communicating needs, and building peer relationships.

Emphasis is placed on independence, classroom routines, and school readiness skills, helping students develop confidence and familiarity with a structured school day. Instruction is play-based and hands-on, allowing students to learn through exploration while gradually increasing expectations aligned with kindergarten readiness standards.

Kindergarten–Grade 5 ASD Intensive Setting

The K–5 ASD Intensive Setting provides continued, specialized support for elementary-aged students on the autism spectrum who require significant assistance to access the curriculum and school environment. Similar to the prekindergarten intensive model, this setting typically includes up to 10 students, a teacher, and a paraprofessional, ensuring a very low student-to-adult ratio.

Instruction is highly individualized and may include modified curriculum, accommodations, or alternative instructional strategies for students who qualify through their IEP. Students receive consistent support in academics, communication, social skills, behavior, and executive functioning.

The classroom incorporates extensive use of visual supports, structured schedules, prompting strategies, and explicit teaching, allowing students to build skills at their own pace while fostering independence whenever possible. Emphasis is placed on functional academics, social interaction, and life skills, with the goal of maximizing student progress, engagement, and overall success within the school environment.
